Basement Remodeling Tips: Winning Wine Cellars

Homeowners have many options when it comes to turning unused basements into fresh new spaces. Why not design something practical but fun, like a wine cellar? In-home wine cellars are a growing trend and you don't have to live in a mansion to have one of your own. Here are some tips on how to create a winning wine cellar for your home:

Location is key

Basements are an ideal location for your in-home wine cellar because wine should be kept cool and out of direct sunlight. If exposed to heat or light for extended periods, wine—which is a perishable food item—may spoil.

Size isn't that important

Wine cellars don't require as much space as you may think. You can build an adequate wine cellar in a basement closet, storage room or even spaces smaller than 30 square feet. If you want to use your wine cellar for entertainment purposes, however, you'll need a space large enough to fit at least a small table and seating. Consider repurposed wine barrels or a bistro set in tight spaces and an extension table and upholstered chairs for larger rooms.

Control temperature and humidity

Wine should be stored between approximately 55°F and 60°F for ideal aging conditions and the humidity level should be kept at 57 percent. Higher than 70 percent humidity can lead to moldy corks, and below 50 percent humidity can cause the cork to dry out. Either may result in spoiled wine (Houzz). Investing in a wine cooling unit, which is like an air conditioner that also regulates humidity and is also known as a wine locker, will help you create the proper storage conditions. Insulation is another important factor when building a wine cellar; the room needs to be airtight. Spray-foam insulation is most effective because it is both an insulator and vapor barrier.

Showcase your collection

Once you have a dedicated space for your wine collection, you'll want to show it off. Storage racks are a great way to store and display your collection. You can find custom designs or off-the-rack options, whatever your budget. For proper long-term storage, bottles should be laid down on their sides, but for the biggest “wow factor,” you'll want a wine rack that stores the bottles with the labels visible.

Light up the room

Lighting will have a major impact on the look and feel of your wine cellar. LED lighting is a great option because it doesn't emit heat that will affect the temperature of the room, even if left on for long periods of time. Dimmers are also a nice touch because they allow you to use bright lighting for organizing and soft lighting for entertaining. They also let you keep the room partially lit to showcase your collection when the cellar isn't being used.

Design elements

If you plan on using your wine cellar to entertain guests, the décor can help set the mood for your gatherings. The entryway is an important design element to consider because it's the first thing your guests will see. Floor to ceiling glass will give your wine cellar a modern feel and provide a clear view of your collection, while custom ironwork or carved wood doors will give it a traditional elegant or rustic look. Personal touches inside the space – art, glassware, tableware and furniture – will make the room functional and fun for entertaining.

Basements don't have to be wasted, never-visited spaces. In-home wine cellars turn basements into unique, celebratory places for family and friends. Follow these tips to create a custom wine cellar that's perfect for you.
