How Landscaping Impacts Your Home's Foundation

One of the main things to take into account when owning a home is how your land is shaped. If you are in the midst of making landscaping plans, or are planning on touching up or redoing your yard, it is important to keep in mind the effect your landscape may have on your home's durability.

When it comes to trees and other plants around the property, make sure that you keep them trimmed back and away from your home.  The excess foliage can cause water damage to your home and possibly leaks due to water running down the house. Also be sure to take note of any hills or piles of dirt near the area of your home and avoid building at the bottom of them. Many common households wish to plant gardens in their yard as well. While this is very common, we would advise against building a garden too close to any structures of your home. Having large beds of soil sitting in your yard will increase the potential of flooding and standing water because of the massive amount of soil in one area, so installing proper drainage systems is key. Without drainage, the soil will create a site for standing water and retain moisture near your home, which is why creating a safe distance between your house and the garden is very important. This will give you proper leeway and hopefully prevent any excess water from pooling up against your home at any point in the future.

When you're landscaping around your home you need to make sure that all water flows away from your home. If this is unavoidable with natural remedies, you'll need to invest in a sufficient drainage system that will protect your home from the elements, especially unwanted water flowing toward the foundation. As we mentioned before, any structure you plan on building in your yard needs to direct water away from your home.  Landscaping can also involve how your driveway is constructed and how your drainage system is placed. Try to make sure that your driveway slopes away from your home to prevent standing water or any potential flooding. Another way to avoid any damage is to install a proper driveway drainage system which will allow any excess water to flow away from the driveway. Driveway installation and drainage installation truly should go hand-in-hand.
