Don't Let Melting Snow Into Your Basement This Winter!

The winter season is full of pesky precipitation—rain, sleet, snow, and ice—which can be inconvenient for a number of reasons. Bad weather limits travel, can ruin your plans, and, of course, can bring water damage to your home. Heavy rain can find its way into your home if the structure isn't properly waterproofed, and those who live in Montgomery County know high water levels in the Potomac River can mean trouble. Something homeowners might not expect is the damage that melting snow and ice can do to your home, particularly, your foundation and basement.

Melting Snow Can Leak Into Your Basement and Cause Damage

Freshly fallen snow might not seem like a danger to your home, but that snow has to melt. Northern Virginia and Maryland weather is infamously known for its unpredictability, so the two feet of snow that falls one night might be gone the next day, leaving plenty of potential for melted snow to seep into your home.

The constant melting and refreezing of snow and ice can cause trouble. If your home in Montgomery County does not have an excellent yard drainage system in place, the extra standing water caused by melting snow could leak right into your basement, leaving you with dampness, mold, or even a flood.

Inspect your property to take note of any potential warning signs that snow might get in this winter. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris so that rain and snow can flow down your gutters and away from your home. Take a look at your basement and investigate any weak spots like cracks or stains on your foundation walls. While you're out shoveling the driveway, take a little extra time to clear out the snow closest to your foundation. If snow is piled up against your foundation, one of the first places it will go once it melts is into your basement.
